PlayStation 5 Slim can now boot Linux through PS5 Linux loader
The PS5 Linux project has received another compatibility update. The loader now supports PlayStation 5 firmware 7.61, which also brings support for PlayStation 5 Slim consoles.
Andy Nguyen, also known as TheOfficialFloW, said the update uses another patched vulnerability. He also confirmed that users on firmware versions between the previous supported range and 7.61 need to update specifically to 7.61.
PS5 Slim support arrives through firmware 7.61
The new release is available as ps5-linux-loader v2.2. The GitHub release notes list one change, “Added 7.61 support.” The main project page now lists firmware 7.61 alongside earlier supported firmware versions from 3.00 to 6.02.
This changes the compatibility range for the project. Previous public support was focused on PS5 Phat models, including firmware 3.xx, 4.xx, 5.xx and 6.02. With firmware 7.61, Slim consoles are now included because the model launched with newer firmware than early PlayStation 5 systems.
ps5-linux community is growing and people have now added new drivers for ethernet, bd-drive, bluetooth and more! But the best news is: ps5-linux is coming to FW 7.61 (released in 2023) via another patched vulnerability. This means it will work on PS5 slim as well. https://t.co/2yPZhU8I7b

The project page says PS5 Linux uses patched hypervisor vulnerabilities to boot a custom Linux loader. It exposes the console as an x86 Linux system with 8 CPU cores, 16 threads and the RDNA 2 GPU running up to 2.23 GHz. The listed feature set includes HDMI 4K60 video and audio output, M.2 SSD support for Linux, all USB ports, Ethernet, internal Bluetooth and Blu-ray drive support.
Firmware limits still apply
For now, the project is still not available on consoles running firmware 8.0 or newer. This also means that PS5 Linux does not support PS5 Pro at this time. Once a new vulnerability is found, and assuming users have not…
