NAIROBI, Kenya Jun 30 – WhatsApp has announced the introduction of a new username feature that will allow users to communicate without sharing their personal phone numbers.

The feature, unveiled on Monday, will enable users worldwide to reserve unique usernames through the app’s settings ahead of the official rollout later this year.

According to WhatsApp, the reservation process began this week, allowing users to secure preferred usernames in advance. To reserve a username, users must update the application to the latest version and navigate to the username section under Settings and Account options.

The move marks a significant shift in how users connect on the platform by introducing an alternative to phone-number-based communication.

The company said the feature is intended to improve privacy by concealing users’ phone numbers when initiating conversations with new contacts.
