You’re not wrong that the modern graphical apps on Linux have improved—by a lot. You’re also not wrong to wonder why that improvement hasn’t pulled more terminal users over to the graphical side. However, the answer isn’t necessarily about loyalty or habit. While I can’t speak for everyone, here’s are five reasons why I personally like using command-line interface (CLI) and terminal user interface (TUI) apps over graphical user interface (GUI) apps.

Even the best-designed GUI apps still depend on the mouse to some extent. You’re clicking menus, dragging windows, digging through sidebars, and jumping between UI elements. Sure, some apps offer excellent keyboard support, but that doesn’t automatically create a keyboard-centric workflow—especially when you’re using them alongside other apps that aren’t nearly as optimized.

At the same time, GUI apps aren’t mouse-only either. You still need the keyboard for typing or searching. That means most graphical workflows rely on two input devices, and constantly switching between them adds friction. You might not notice it—or care about it—at first. But if you’re someone like me who is working at a computer for eight to ten hours a day, it becomes an occupational hazard.
