After the recent price hike that forced prospective buyers to dig deeper into their pockets, the Cupertino-based tech giant is now planning to launch an updated version of the Mac Studio powered by the M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips. The current Mac Studio, released in early 2025, features the M4 Max and M3 Ultra chips.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the M5-based Mac Studio, which is expected to be a chip-focused refresh, remains on track for a launch later this year. Mac Studio supplies have been hit by unusually long wait times due to surging demand and supply constraints. Buyers will now also have to contend with higher prices following the recent price increase.

A New M5 Refresh Under Development
A refreshed Mac Studio is expected to arrive soon. Earlier reports had suggested the update would debut around WWDC, but the launch was reportedly delayed due to ongoing memory supply issues. Mark Gurman now says the wait may soon be over, with the M5 Ultra version “due this year.”
The upcoming Mac Studio is not expected to receive a major design overhaul. Instead, Apple is likely to retain the existing design while equipping the desktop with the new M5-series chips.
M7 Ultra Expected in 2028
Gurman also revealed that Apple has more significant changes planned for future Mac Studio models powered by the M7 Ultra chip. The company is reportedly expected to skip the high-end variants of the M6 family, meaning there could be an M6 chip, but no M6 Pro, M6 Max, or M6 Ultra.
He added that the M7 Ultra model could receive a design refresh, although he noted that Apple typically keeps its desktop designs unchanged for several years.
