The Academy Software Foundation that advances open-source efforts for the VFX/cinema industry and more with the likes of OpenVDB, OpenMoonRay, Open Shading Language, and other projects, has announced the formation of a new working group to help with Wayland adoption for artists.

The Academy Software Foundation and Visual Effects Society’s Technology Committee formed the “Wayland for Artists Working Group” in working together on Wayland-related matters for Linux. This working group will be an industry-wide forum for changes around the VFX and animation industry for ensuring Wayland works well for professional VFX and animation artists.

With more of the Linux desktop efforts moving from X11 to Wayland, the Wayland for Artists Working Group is working to ensure the Wayland transition is smooth for artists and no gaps in feature/functionality.

“The Wayland for Artists Working Group will explore a range of industry-specific areas that may be impacted, including graphics tablet support, window management, input focus, key bindings, desktop customization, remote access solutions, GPU acceleration, color management, High Dynamic Range displays, and compatibility with commercial, open source, and in-house applications.”
