Last week, the United Counties of SDG council endorsed that the Eastern Ontario IT Collaborative’s (EOITC) Responsible AI Use Framework be used to guide the adoption of AI and directed staff to form a cross-functional AI governance team to develop an AI usage standard.

“Staff are already using AI in their day-to-day work, reflecting a broader trend of natural adoption. While AI presents opportunity, it also presents risks related to privacy, security, and potential for inaccurate or biased outputs,” said SDG business systems coordinator Colleen Bissonnette.

Bissonnette explained that all local municipalities face the same AI-related risks and regulatory requirements.

“Should council endorse the framework, Counties staff will invite local municipalities to participate in this team,” she said. “Local municipalities may choose to adopt the framework individually to support their own legislative and governance requirements.”

There will be no immediate costs incurred related to adopting the framework, council heard.
