Contrary to previous claims the first-ever foldable iPhone remains on track for a September release, says Digitimes.

In its latest report, we’re told Apple has just started delivering small batches of components for Apple’s the device, presumably for trial production.

Today’s reporting adds a few more details:

  • The device will use a dual-layer, ultra-thin glass structure so the display crease will be far less visible – Apple seems to have spent over a decade refining the hinge.
  • The iPhone Fold/Ultra will ship in three different storage capacities, 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB.
  • The 1TB model may cost as much as $2,900.

These small revelations follow previous claims, vis a vis an Pad mini size when unfolded, and work Apple is doing to make iOS support new app layouts that can switch between different screen sizes, folded and unfolded,

The OLED display (an outer cover and internal folding display) is expected to comprise a 5.5-inch outer screen and a huge 7.8-inch internal folding display with a near-square 4:3 aspect ratio, using tech from Samsung.

The device may use a vapour cooling system and an A20 chip. Analyst Ming Chi-Kuo has previously said the device dimensions will be 9-9.5mm when closed and up to 4.8mm thick when unfolded.

In related news, Apple continues working on its 20th anniversary iPhone, scheduled for introduction in 2027, reports claim.
