Anyone seeking to contact Venite University through its website would be required to provide personal information, including a name and email address. What the visitor would not find, however, is any explanation of how that information is handled after submission.

FIJ found on Sunday that the website of Venite University, a private tertiary institution in Iloro-Ekiti, Ekiti State, collects personal data from visitors despite having no privacy policy.

Through the university’s Contact page, visitors are asked to provide their names, email addresses, subjects and messages before sending enquiries to the institution. Yet, nowhere on the website is there a privacy notice explaining why the information is collected, who may have access to it, how long it may be retained or the rights available to those submitting it.

The absence of such a policy leaves visitors with little information about what happens to their data once they click the ‘Send Message’ button.

WHAT DATA PROTECTION RULES SAY

The  National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) requires government websites to maintain privacy policies when collecting personal information from members of the public.

Section 10.4 (i, ii) of the NITDA guidelines mandates all government websites to exercise diligence when collecting personal details or information about visitors to their websites.

It also requires all government websites to incorporate prominently displayed privacy statements clearly stating the purpose for which information is being collected where a government institution seeks to collect or collects personal information from visitors through its website.
