The Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa (AMECEA) is set to host a formation webinar for bishops, religious superiors, and senior ecclesial leaders across the region on Tuesday, June 23, focused on how the Church in Africa can navigate the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) with theological and pastoral clarity.

Titled “Magnifica Humanitas: Leading the Church in the Age of Artificial Intelligence,” the webinar borrows from Pope Leo XIV’s first encyclical, which addressed the safeguarding of humanity amid rapid advances in AI.

The poster announcing the webinar highlights that the session is designed to help Church leadership respond “with the clarity of faith, the courage of the Gospel, and the wisdom of Social Doctrine,” framing the AI era as an opportunity for renewed mission rather than a threat to be feared.

The two-hour session to be moderated by Fr. Andrew Kaufa, the Coordinator for Social Communications at AMECEA, will discuss a number of topics, including:  practical literacy on how AI actually works, a critical analysis of transhumanism and posthumanism, theological reflection on human dignity and the limits of machine intelligence, and the Holy Father’s appeal for AI policy frameworks, governance, regulation and global solidarity.

The keynote speaker will be Bishop Emmanuel Badejo, of Oyo Diocese in Nigeria, and a panel of scholars and Church communicators including Br. Elias Mokua a member of the Society of Jesus (SJ) and the Director of the Loyola Centre for Media and Communication (LCMC) in Kenya; Fr. Peter Bwanali SJ of Copperbelt University in Zambia; Fr. Gabriel Mapulanga of Caritas–Zambia Catholic Bishops Conference; and Sr. Agnes Lucy Lando of Daystar University in Kenya.

The webinar will run from 4:00–6:00 p.m. EAT/ 3:00–5:00 p.m. CAT.  Those interested in following the meeting on Tuesday can do so via the Zoom…
