As the US-Iran war escalated in its early days, the internet was abuzz with reports that the Pentagon was using advanced large language models to identify targets and assist in attack planning. Reports suggested that targets identified in this manner included Tehran’s Azadi Sports Complex and the Shajareh Tayyebeh Girls’ School in strikes that reportedly killed at least 156 people, including around 100 children.
While Anthropic and several other AI models had already come under scrutiny for their potential military applications, a recent statement from Cameron Stanley, the Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Officer, has brought another name into the spotlight. The AI chief recently acknowledged the use of Elon Musk’s Grok chatbot for national security purposes in a sworn statement, noting that xAI’s technology had been used throughout the conflict.

He further added that, “The Grok Gov Model offers features unique to xAI that are found in no other frontier AI model.” As reported by The Independent, this is the first time a Trump administration official has publicly confirmed the use of Grok during the bombing campaign in Iran, where the US and its allies have reportedly killed at least 3,468 people.
Details revealed through NAACP lawsuit
Stanley’s statement on the use of AI for national security emerged amid the settlement of a lawsuit filed by the NAACP against Grok’s parent company, xAI, over alleged violations of the Clean Air Act. The case was brought after xAI deployed dozens of portable combustion turbines to power its data centres, a move that critics argued could lead to increased pollution and harmful emissions in nearby communities.
According to reports, the Trump administration has sought to defend Musk and xAI in the case. It was during proceedings related to this lawsuit that details about Grok’s use in the war reportedly came to light.
