India’s smartphone resale market is expanding rapidly, driven by shorter upgrade cycles and rising participation in recommerce. But alongside this growth, data security concerns are emerging as a key friction point, reshaping how consumers approach device resale.

A new survey by Cashify, based on responses from 8,000 users, highlights how trust, not price, is becoming the biggest barrier in the market. While 56.6% of respondents said they have sold or exchanged a smartphone, nearly 69% reported hesitating to sell their device due to data privacy fears.

The anxiety is widespread. Around 74% of users are concerned about potential misuse of personal data after resale, pointing to a growing awareness of digital risk as smartphones increasingly store financial, identity and personal information over years of use.

This has also started to influence decision-making. The survey found that 45.3% of respondents now prioritise data privacy and security when choosing where to sell, compared to 29.5% who prioritise price. The shift suggests the market is moving away from being transaction-led to trust-led.

At the same time, there remains a gap between awareness and practice. While 83.3% of users perform a factory reset before resale, confidence in this method is limited. Around 41.1% believe factory resets may not permanently delete data, and 31% say they have successfully recovered deleted data from devices—reinforcing concerns that commonly used methods are insufficient.

This disconnect continues to shape consumer perception. Even as users follow standard safeguards, the lack of assurance around complete data deletion sustains uncertainty and slows participation in resale.
