In one of the most significant government interventions into the commercial artificial intelligence sector to date, AI developer Anthropic announced Friday that it had been directed by U.S. authorities to suspend access to its newest and most powerful AI systems—Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5—for foreign nationals worldwide, triggering fresh debate over national security, export controls, and the future governance of frontier AI technologies.
The directive, which Anthropic said was delivered late Friday afternoon, has sent shockwaves through the rapidly evolving AI industry and raised questions about how governments may seek to regulate increasingly capable models that possess advanced cybersecurity and software engineering abilities.
According to the company, the U.S. government ordered the immediate suspension of access to the models for all non-U.S. citizens, regardless of whether those users are located inside the United States or abroad.
