After being showcased and teased at the Android Show just a few weeks ago, “Screen Reactions” are now live in the latest Android 17 QPR1 Beta 4 release for eligible Pixel phones.

With the rollout of the latest Android 17 preview, we now have an idea of how Screen Reactions green screen-like effect will work with Pixel devices. Baked into the system screen recorder, there is a new “Show selfie camera” option that will appear alongside other controls for the built-in video option.

This method negates the outside edit or external app process that was often needed before on Pixel phones to get these green screen video clips. Instead, you can do it all locally from a system app and have it ready to upload or share instantly, no further editing or tweaking required.

You are only able to use Screen Reactions when recording your entire screen. The option is unavailable when using the “Single app” recording option. As soon as you toggle the option, you’ll get a preview right away before recording, allowing you to frame, get set up, and prepare.

A paint swatch tool is also present, so you can add a colored background to your tiny selfie video. This helps if you want to stand out from the screen recording in question. Sadly, there are only six color variants to choose from right now, including black, purple, red, blue, green, and orange. We’re hoping that this will get expanded or allow for a custom color at some point in the future.

This will instantly toggle local microphone recording, but you can toggle this off if you wish, as it doesn’t appear to be necessary for Screen Reactions to work.
