Proton announced this week that it has completed a major rewrite of Proton Drive that delivers major performance improvements and sets up a coming release on Linux.

“We’ve been focused on making end-to-end encrypted cloud storage faster, smoother, and more consistent everywhere you use it,” Proton’s Anant Vijay Singh writes. “To get there, we rebuilt Proton Drive around a stronger technical foundation, a single, shared engine that unifies all our cloud storage apps across platforms and powers all uploading, downloading, encryption, and more.”

The changes deliver up to two times the download speeds, up to three times the upload speeds, and four times faster file encryption today, while improving battery usage on mobile. But it also sets up Proton Drives for deeper integrations with other Proton apps and, coming soon, support for Linux and other clients.

Proton has also created a Proton Drive SDK so that its developers can more easily create integrations that work on all platforms and improve the cryptographic model that protects user data. But it will also support third-party developers who want to integrate with Proton Drive.

“We’re also now actively building one of the community’s most-requested features,” Singh adds, “the Proton Drive client for Linux, built from the ground up to leverage the SDK.”
