Google’s new feature works inside the Phone by Google app. When a call appears to come from one of your contacts, Android checks whether that call is actually coming from that person’s phone.

The key detail is the “silent confirmation signal”. If both people use the right Android setup, the caller’s phone sends a quiet background signal that confirms the call is real. If that signal is missing, Android can show a warning that someone may be pretending to call from your contact’s number.

That matters because caller ID has a huge weakness. Scammers can spoof numbers, which means they can make a call look like it came from someone you know. The US Federal Trade Commission warns that scammers can make almost any name or number appear on your screen.

So Google isn’t just asking, “Do you recognise this number?” It’s asking a better question: Can this call prove where it came from?
