Pa. Lawmaker Proposes Privacy Rules for Smart Glasses | News

A Pennsylvania lawmaker is proposing new safeguards aimed at protecting privacy as smart glasses become increasingly common.
State Rep. Joe Ciresi, majority chair of the House Communications & Technology Committee, has introduced legislation that would require smart glasses manufactured, sold and used in Pennsylvania to include a visual indicator for when the device is recording audio or video.
Ciresi said the measure, House Bill 2603, is designed to address privacy concerns associated with emerging wearable technology while still encouraging innovation.
“Smart glasses are an innovative technological advancement, but their design also allows them to easily record or stream without anyone noticing,” Ciresi said. “Considering the implications this has for individual privacy and surveillance, we must take thoughtful, proactive steps to address those risks.”
According to Ciresi, the legislation would establish privacy protections similar to those already found in Pennsylvania’s wiretapping and recording laws. The bill would require retailers to inform purchasers about the state’s recording laws and their responsibilities when using smart glasses.
The proposal would also prohibit users from disabling a visual recording indicator in an effort to conceal when a device is actively recording.
