Sixteen years after 7-year-old Kyron Horman vanished from a school science fair, investigators say new technology and additional staffing are helping push one of Oregon’s most high-profile missing person cases forward.
The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office announced Thursday that it has completed digitizing the entire case file, converting thousands of pages of reports, photographs and evidence into searchable digital records investigators can now analyze using newer technology.
Kyron disappeared June 4, 2010, after arriving at Skyline Elementary School for a science fair. He was last seen that morning and has never been found.
Investigators said digitizing the case allows detectives to process and analyze more than 5,300 written documents and more than half a terabyte of case data in ways that were not previously possible.
Officials said staffing dedicated to the investigation has also increased. In addition to sheriff’s office detectives assigned to the case, investigators continue working alongside the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office, the FBI, the East County Major Crimes Team and Portland police.
“Sixteen years have passed since Kyron Horman disappeared,” Multnomah County Sheriff Nicole Morrisey O’Donnell said in a statement. “I want Kyron’s family and our community to know that he has never been forgotten.”
Multnomah County District Attorney Nathan Vasquez said the lack of public updates should not be interpreted as a lack of investigative work.
“A lack of news on the case does not mean a lack of progress,” Vasquez said in a statement. “We are working on this behind the scenes, following every possible clue.”
