Navy veteran uses technology skills to help fellow veterans

A Navy veteran who overcame challenges during her military service is now using her experience and technology expertise to help fellow veterans navigate an increasingly digital world.
Cynitra Stewart joined the U.S. Navy in 1992 and served as a non-designated airman, performing a wide range of duties during her military career.
“Doing aviation and mechanics, washing planes, anything they wanted me to do,” Stewart said.
Stewart said her desire to serve began in high school after the death of her father.
“I always wanted to join the military because when I was in high school, my father passed away,” Stewart said. “My Naval Junior ROTC instructors became father figures to me, and they had both retired from the Navy.”
While Stewart said she was proud of her service, she also faced obstacles as a woman in the military during the early 1990s.
“During the time that I went in, women were frowned upon being in the military,” Stewart said. “Many commanding officers preferred men in the Navy.”
Stewart recalled experiencing discrimination during one of her assignments.
“The last duty station I was at — I still remember that commanding officer’s name — but he was a misogynist. He didn’t like females in his Navy,” she said.
Despite those challenges, Stewart said she enjoyed her military career and valued the opportunities it provided, including work in cybersecurity and technology-related fields.
Although she has few photos from her years in service due to personal hardships, Stewart said the experience helped shape the person she is today.
Now a business owner, Stewart focuses on helping veterans better understand and use technology.
“I’ll see a problem, study that problem, and then try to create a solution to that problem,” Stewart said. “That’s what I do at my company.”
She said technology can often be frustrating and overwhelming for some veterans, particularly as more services move online.
