Major banking group Resona Holdings has established an internal team to deal with cutting-edge artificial intelligence models highly adept at detecting system vulnerabilities, Group CEO and President Masahiro Minami said in a recent interview.

The rise of high-performance AI is “both a great opportunity and a risk,” Minami said, indicating his intention to promptly strengthen security systems.

The team mainly comprises members from departments related to information technology security and group strategy.

With U.S. startup Anthropic’s Claude Mythos AI model in mind, the team will focus on gathering information and developing measures to enhance the group’s security systems.

Minami also said that about 30,000 Resona group employees have access to generative AI for their work.

Minami said he hopes that the Resona group will be one of Japan’s leading companies in the use of AI. He also said the group will nurture experts and improve its data infrastructure.

Looking ahead, Minami said the group aims to increase the balance of corporate loans, a core profit source, by ¥4.2 trillion over the next three years from the current level of about ¥27 trillion amid rising interest rates.

“We will provide funds smoothly to drive Japan’s growth and regional revitalization,” he said, adding that the group will focus on small and midsize companies.
