Actor Emily Blunt has revealed that she chose not to use artificial intelligence while filming a crucial sequence in Disclosure Day, saying she is “a bit terrified” of the technology.

Speaking on Hot Ones, Blunt discussed a major scene in the upcoming science-fiction thriller directed by Steven Spielberg, in which her character gradually transforms and begins speaking in a non-human language.

Describing the sequence, Blunt said, “It’s a four-minute one that we shot that leads up to that moment where she’s gradually sort of disintegrating.”

She said the production considered different approaches for the vocal effects but she was uncomfortable with relying on artificial intelligence. “There were various ways you could do it. You could go the AI route, which I’m a bit terrified of. I thought I could make some really strange sounds,” Blunt said.

Instead, the actor worked directly with the film’s sound department and recorded a range of sounds herself. According to Blunt, she produced clicking noises, humming sounds, consonant-heavy vocalisations and unusual breathing patterns, which were later developed by the film’s sound designer.

“I did sort of the clicking sounds, I did sort of humming sounds, consonant sounds, breathing strange sounds. The sound designer went away and created that weird sound,” Blunt added.

The actor’s comments follow her earlier criticism of artificial intelligence in the entertainment industry. During a previous appearance on a Variety podcast, she had expressed concern about AI-generated performers and the growing use of the technology in Hollywood.

“Good Lord, we’re screwed. That is really, really scary,” Blunt had said at the time, urging agencies not to “take away our human connection.”
