How artificial intelligence has affected the world of weather forecasting

IA, NE, SD (KCAU) — Artificial intelligence, or A.I., has been a growing topic of discussion over the past few years, but has been around for decades. The term was originally coined back in 1956, and it’s been growing ever since, especially in the world of weather.

Some people in the weather world have been working more with A.I. than others, including YouTuber and Digital Meteorologist Ryan Hall.

“What a lot of people, especially my audience and people just generally in the public, don’t realize is that weather forecasting is really one of the first frontiers for A.I. We’ve been doing this for a long time,” Hall said. “Most of your weather models are A.I.”

Hall has even been dabbling in coding A.I. himself, creating Y’allBot, which livestreams weather coverage nationwide, 24-7.

“The reason why Y’allBot exists is because A.I. is very interesting to me, right? Not for any other reason other than creating or trying to distill weather information and make it more accessible to the public,” stated Hall when asked about why he created Y’allBot. “And all it’s doing right now is taking those area forecast discussions and discussions from the National Weather Service and the Weather Prediction Center and stuff like that. And it’s just turning it into packages and nice graphics and stories that it can then relay to the viewers in a very accessible way.”

Although there are many positives with using A.I., especially in weather, there are some downsides, including seeing some A.I.-altered weather photos being submitted as storm reports.
