WASHINGTON (TNND) — American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten called for restrictions on artificial intelligence and screen usage in schools.
In a speech on Wednesday, Weingarten said that students are “drowning in tech” and there needs to be research done on the effects of students’ learning with AI.
“Students need their teachers — real human beings, not robots and not chatbots,” she said during a speech in Washington, D.C., according to NBC News.
She clarified that she wasn’t calling for a ban on AI or screen usage, but there has to be a balance.
“I am not calling for an AI ban or a Chromebook bonfire,” she said. “What I am calling for is getting the balance right to harness the benefits of technology while mitigating the harms.”
Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. recently joined Iowa GOP Gov. Kim Reynolds to discuss the Office of the Surgeon General initiative on youth screen time guidance.
“This advisory gives parents practical science-based tools to help protect your children and build healthier habits at home,” Kennedy said during a press conference with Reynolds. “But parents can’t solve this problem alone. Schools should limit unnecessary screen use in classrooms.”

The report from the Surgeon General’s office goes into statistics such as five out of 10 teenagers having experienced cyberbullying and that by 2050, about 40% of children will be myopic.
