Google announced Gemini Intelligence at The Android Show on May 12, 2026, calling it the most advanced AI system ever built for Android. The promise is bold: an intelligent layer that can automate multi-step tasks, build custom widgets from voice commands, clean up voice-to-text dictation, and proactively suggest next steps based on what’s happening on your screen.

We previously covered the biggest Gemini Intelligence features coming to Android, but this guide focuses on the hardware requirements that decide whether your phone can actually run them.

But there’s a catch that Google didn’t exactly highlight during the presentation. Not every Android phone will support Gemini Intelligence. In fact, most won’t. The hardware requirements, buried in a footnote on Google’s official Gemini Intelligence page, are steep enough to exclude millions of devices that users would reasonably consider “current” or “high-end.”

If you’re wondering whether your phone makes the cut, here’s how to find out.

Gemini Intelligence vs. the Gemini App: Why the Distinction Matters

Before checking your phone’s specs, it’s important to separate Gemini Intelligence from the regular Gemini app. The Gemini app is a cloud-based chatbot that works on most Android phones running Android 10 or later with at least 2GB of RAM.

Gemini Intelligence is different: it is a system-level AI layer built into Android 17 that runs locally on your phone using Gemini Nano v3, so it needs much stronger hardware. This local processing is what powers the headline features:

  • Multi-step task automation: Gemini can book a ride, order food, or shop across multiple apps without you touching the screen.
  • Create My Widget: Generate custom home screen widgets by describing what you want in plain language.
  • Rambler: An upgraded voice-to-text system in Gboard that removes filler words like “um” and “uh” in real time.
  • Smarter Autofill: Gemini pulls complex information from Gmail, Drive, and Photos to…
