Alerting users about dead apps will prevent them from discovering at the most inopportune time that an app they might rely on is useless, and will save valuable storage space on devices.

Changes coming to Play Store

In an APK teardown of Google Play Store v51.4.19, Android Authority noticed strings of code that suggest users will be notified when an app is removed from the store, as well as when an app will no longer receive updates.

There is no word yet on if or when this change will be deployed.

Current policy

Right now, the Play Store only updates users about app if there is a security concern.

This is done via Google Play Protect, which periodically scans devices for harmful apps. When it’s found one on a device, it sends the user a notification with a one-tap option to uninstall the app in question.

Google Play Protect is on by default, but if you want to make sure it’s currently enabled on your device, Open the Google Play Store app, tap the profile icon, and then select Play Protect Settings. You can then check that Scan Apps With Play Protect is set to “on.”
