Six years after a class action lawsuit was filed against one of the largest and most profitable tech companies in the world, the parties have reached a settlement, following allegations of nonconsensual information collection against Google. Now, Texas residents and beyond could get money from the $135 million payout.
Is the Android settlement legitimate?
Yes, several plaintiffs from California, Colorado, Missouri, and Illinois filed a class-action complaint in November 2020, according to online records. The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. Plaintiffs allege “Google’s Android operating system causes Android mobile devices to transfer a variety of information to Google without users’ permission, consuming users’ cellular data,” the settlement website states. The case has remained active over the years, with mediation sessions taking place in 2024 and 2025.
In the months that followed, the plaintiffs and Google, LLC, the defendant, agreed to settle the case. The tech giant maintains that it did nothing wrong, and the plaintiffs say their claims are genuine and can be proven. Both sides believe it is “an appropriate compromise of all claims” and want to “put to rest all controversy, and to avoid the uncertainty, risk, expense, and burden” of the costs that would be involved in continuing to litigate through trial and appeal, according to the settlement agreement.
How much will each person get from the Google settlement?
As of Thursday, May 21, the exact amount is unknown because it depends on how many people file claims. About 100 million people are eligible for some of the cash, according to the settlement website. The settlement administrator is trying to work out a deal in which each class member gets the same amount.
