First came AI, and it became an integral part of all our lives; then came the advent of training AI, but things remained on the digital front. Until now, with the coming of ‘Physical AI.’

Bengaluru-based household service-providing startup Pronto has initiated a pilot programme to record its staff while providing services such as cleaning, folding, washing, and meal preparation at users’ homes. The recorded data in video form will be processed and used to train physical AI machines and robots.

Pronto’s move has sparked a debate around privacy among users, investors, and competitors, with founders from India Inc. chiming in with reactions.

It all came to the fore on May 22, when Entrackr, an independent online tracking platform, released a report citing investor documents that suggested that Pronto was capturing videos to help train AI-powered robotic systems.

As per Entrackr, in an internal memo, Glade Brook Capital, an investor in Pronto, stated: “Pronto is seeking to formalize India’s vast informal labor markets and in the process generate data to help train physical AI and robotics.” It further said that the company is already “piloting real-world training data with leading physical AI labs.”

According to the investor’s note, the company is building a data-focused business by utilising its workforce to gather real-world household data for robotics research labs. The memo further states that initial interest from potential partners has been “promising,” and that the company is “rapidly advancing efforts to commercialise the initiative,” as per Entrackr.

In response to the report, Pronto confirmed that it had been conducting a limited pilot programme involving AI-driven data initiatives, while maintaining that customers had the option to voluntarily consent to the recording of service sessions

Unless you have opted-in and paid for the program personally, the Pro doesn’t come to the house with a camera. Opt in is not one time, it has to be…
