Colombia and China signed an academic alliance. Colombia’s Ministry of National Education oversaw the signing of two academic cooperation agreements with the People’s Republic of China on Thursday to strengthen research, technology transfer, and mobility in rural areas. Representatives from the South China Agricultural University, the University of Antioquia, and the National Pedagogical University signed the agreements in Bogota. The agreements seek to build applied scientific capacity in rural communities across the country.
The agreements include student and faculty exchanges, research internships, dual degree programs, and scientific cooperation in agricultural biotechnology. Through these initiatives, both nations aim to develop technological solutions to improve productivity and food security in their respective regions.
Investment in agro-industrial technology
The national government announced a US$1 million investment to establish the Agro-Industrial Technology and Innovation Center in Caucasia, Antioquia. The Ministry of Education will allocate these public funds to strengthen the Technological Development and Transfer Center in this subregion. The South China Agricultural University and the University of Antioquia will jointly lead this scientific complex to benefit the communities of the Lower Cauca region.
The institutions will focus the center’s efforts on designing solutions for rural development and food security in the region. Asian researchers will contribute advanced hybrid rice cultivation techniques and precision tillage adapted to local conditions. Colombian technicians will then transfer the acquired knowledge directly to farmers’ associations in the area.
