As the United States celebrates its semiquincentennial, let’s not take for granted our ability to count up to 250. In other words, we wouldn’t be where we are now without math.
In fact, 2026 is the “year of math” – a nationwide campaign to celebrate math and elevate awareness of its central role in society. In July, Philadelphia will host the International Congress of Mathematicians, where the Fields Medal, often described as the Nobel Prize of mathematics, will be awarded.
Beyond these celebrations, math deserves the spotlight because it is the invisible foundation of modern life. And if we let the moment pass without changing our approach and attitude toward math, we will be ill-prepared for the future.
Artificial intelligence runs on linear algebra, probability and optimization. Quantum computing rests on advanced mathematics. Biotechnology depends on statistical modeling and differential equations. Cybersecurity relies on number theory. Climate science uses large-scale computational models. Data science shapes decisions in healthcare, finance, agriculture and national security. Even high-level sports performance is achieved through geometry, physics, probability and analytics – just watch the World Cup coming to our shores this year.
In the age of algorithms, mathematics is not a niche discipline. It is national infrastructure.
Yet our higher education system has not fully caught up to this reality. Undergraduate mathematics, often structured around decades-old sequences, remains disconnected from the interdisciplinary, data-rich and computational world students will enter. Too many students experience mathematics as a gatekeeper rather than a gateway. If we are serious about preparing the next generation, we must modernize undergraduate mathematics to reflect contemporary applications, integrate data science and modeling, and create multiple, relevant pathways aligned with students’ academic and career goals.
