Apple may position privacy-first Siri overhaul as key AI differentiator at WWDC

Apple is expected to place privacy at the centre of its artificial intelligence strategy as it prepares to unveil a redesigned version of Siri at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June.
According to reports by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the company is planning a significant Siri relaunch aimed at strengthening Apple’s position in the rapidly evolving AI race, where rivals including Google and OpenAI have moved aggressively with chatbot-style products and generative AI tools.
The upgraded Siri is expected to arrive as Apple’s first standalone AI assistant app, reportedly powered in part by Google’s Gemini models. The experience could resemble conversational AI platforms such as ChatGPT, allowing users to interact with Siri in a more natural chatbot format.
However, Apple is likely to differentiate the product through privacy-focused features and stricter controls over user data. One of the proposed additions reportedly includes automatic chat deletion settings similar to those available in Apple’s Messages app.
Users may be given the option to erase conversations automatically after a set period, such as 30 days or one year, while also retaining the ability to store chats indefinitely if preferred.
The approach would align with Apple’s long-standing branding around privacy and data protection, particularly at a time when scrutiny over how AI companies collect, retain and train on user information continues to grow globally.
The Siri overhaul is being closely watched because it represents Apple’s most visible attempt yet to catch up in generative AI. Competitors including Google, OpenAI and Microsoft have rapidly expanded AI offerings across search, productivity software and mobile ecosystems over the past two years.
