Google shifted its mobile strategy on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, by announcing the launch of Googlebooks, a new generation of laptops powered by Android and built around the Gemini Intelligence system. These devices will begin shipping later this year as a successor to the web-first Chromebook model established in 2011.
The tech giant developed Googlebooks to integrate generative AI directly into the user interface through a feature called the Magic Pointer. By moving the cursor, users activate a full-screen Gemini experience that monitors screen content to provide contextual data and cross-app suggestions, as reported by arstechnica.com.
Hardware for the new platform will be produced by industry partners including Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo. While Google has not confirmed plans for a first-party device, all partner models will feature a mandatory “Glowbar” light strip on the lid to identify them as Googlebooks.
Google representatives highlighted the aesthetic and utility of the new identification light.
