Let’s Retire ‘Vibe Coding’

There’s a term making the rounds right now that I find both fascinating and a little misleading: “vibe coding.” The idea is that AI has made software development so accessible that anyone, developer or not, can simply describe what they want in plain language and watch the code materialize. The term is catchy. The reality is more nuanced.

To my mind, what we’re really talking about is the natural evolution of application development. Pre-AI, developers had to manually write every line of code. Post-AI, we let AI do the heavy lifting. Things move a lot faster. But here’s the part that often gets glossed over: you still need to be a developer and a programmer to build professional, production-grade applications. The tool has changed. The craft has not.

Developing software, whether you’re using AI coding assistants or a blank IDE,  still demands experience, patience, a particular aptitude, and a clear vision of what you are building. It requires the ability to define every aspect of a system and communicate that precisely. It requires many iterations, failures, and still enormous amounts of user testing, QA, and security review. AI compresses timelines dramatically. It does not compress the judgment required to ship something you’d stake your business on.
