The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction says it is in contact with the parent company of Canvas about the issue.
RALEIGH, N.C. — Several school districts in the state are responding to a cybersecurity incident involving Instructure, the company behind Canvas, a widely used learning management system.
In an email to WFMY News 2 on Thursday afternoon, the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction confirmed it was notified by Canvas’ parent company, Instructure, about the issue on Tuesday.
According to an NCDPI spokesperson, the department and some North Carolina Public School Units “had been impacted” by the incident.
NCDPI said the situation is developing and that it “does not yet have confirmation on which districts and charter schools are impacted.”
Canvas is widely used by schools for online assignments, grades, teacher communication, and digital classroom instruction.
NCDPI said Instructure is contacting affected school districts directly as the company confirms which systems or users may have been involved. WFMY News 2 has reached out to Piedmont Triad school districts to see if any have been impacted. Large school districts, including Charlotte-Mecklenburg and Wake, have reported impacts.
State education officials said they are working alongside the North Carolina Department of Information Technology and Instructure as the investigation continues.
At this point, officials have not released details about what information may have been exposed or how many schools could be affected.
