Dell and Lenovo join LVFS as top-tier sponsors

Dell and Lenovo have joined the Linux Vendor Firmware Service as top-tier sponsors, giving the Linux firmware update project direct financial support from two of the largest PC vendors. LVFS is used by Linux distributions to deliver firmware metadata to clients such as fwupdmgr and GNOME Software.

The sponsorship was announced by Richard Hughes, the maintainer of LVFS and fwupd. Hughes said LVFS has now deployed more than 145 million firmware updates from more than 100 vendors to millions of Linux devices.

LVFS Sponsorship Announcement

Some great news: I’m pleased to announce that both Dell and Lenovo have agreed to be premier sponsors for the Linux Vendor Firmware Service (LVFS) as part of our new sustainability effort.

Over 145 million firmware updates have been deployed now, from over a hundred different vendors to millions of different Linux devices.
With the huge industry support from Lenovo and Dell (and our existing sponsors of Framework, OSFF, and of course both the Linux Foundation and Red Hat) we can build this ecosystem stronger and higher than before; we can continue the great work we’ve done long into the future.

LVFS allows hardware vendors to upload firmware updates in a redistributable .cab archive with Linux-specific metadata. End users can then install system firmware and device firmware updates through fwupd without downloading vendor-specific tools.

Dell and Lenovo already support Linux firmware delivery on many systems through LVFS and fwupd. Their new sponsorship follows the LVFS sustainability plan, which called for large vendors using the service to contribute code, engineering time, or funding.

LVFS lists Dell and Lenovo under its highest sponsor tier. Framework and the Open Source Firmware Foundation are listed as startup sponsors, while the Linux Foundation and Red Hat remain engineering support sponsors.
