The Gardner’s biggest concern is Artificial Superintelligence, which is AI designed to go beyond human intelligence on any topic.
BOISE, Idaho — A new local chapter of Pause AI, an international movement aimed at pausing AI, said it wanted to slow the development of advanced artificial intelligence as more people start seeing the technology show up in daily life.
Jack and Cathryn Gardner started the Boise chapter after they learned AI had made songs using copyrighted music. Jack is a local musician, and Cathryn is an elementary band teacher.
The couple said their biggest concern is Artificial Superintelligence, which they described as AI that goes beyond human intelligence on any topic. The Gardners called it dangerous and unethical.
They said they wanted a pro-human international agreement that would stop the development of superintelligence. Additionally, they were looking for a balance where AI could be used for research, but humans would still be the ones creating art or diagnosing patients, for example.
Pause AI chapters are grassroots advocacy groups that make their concerns known to elected officials.
When asked what he would say to people who believe AI is unavoidable at this point, Jack Gardner pushed back on that idea.
“I do think it’s cynical. I do think it’s really cynical. I do think that is more of the doomerist view that people who would call us doomers. We are optimists. We are looking for this beautiful marriage of technology and humanity with humanity in the driver’s seat,” said Jack Gardner.
