Anthropic’s “Mythos” AI model has raised global cybersecurity concerns due to its advanced capability to identify and potentially exploit system vulnerabilities, prompting governments and financial institutions

The rather alarming introduction of Anthropic’s “Mythos” has left market segments jittered, with concerns across governments, banks, and cybersecurity experts. Mythos highlights the possibility of AI-driven autonomy that requires profound readiness to be recognised and addressed before it leads to potential disasters.

While Anthropic is currently allowed to be used under restrictive conditions, its full-fledged operation could create issues for established cybersecurity protocols, which are not trained to remain vigilant against such AI-driven attacks.

Thanks to the model’s improved ability to streamline functions, it could help scammers automate attack attempts and increase repetition rates. This would enable hackers to strike multiple times in one go and potentially evade existing countermeasures that cannot recognise AI-based threats. Mythos could also enable more personalised phishing, making cybercrime harder to detect and cheaper to execute.

A BBC report earlier detailed how experts believe Mythos has an unprecedented ability to identify and exploit cybersecurity weaknesses. It was further extensively discussed for its cybersecurity concerns at the International Monetary Fund meeting in Washington, D.C., this week.

Canadian Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne told the BBC: “The difference is that the Strait of Hormuz-we know where it is and we know how large it is… the issue that we’re facing with Anthropic is that it’s the unknown unknown.”

“This is requiring a lot of attention so that we have safeguards and processes in place to ensure the resilience of our financial systems,” he added.

New Vulnerabilities

The report mentions that top bankers will be given early access to the model to test…
