Germany-based open-source software provider SUSE is maintaining a single, scalable Linux kernel across systems ranging from edge devices to data center infrastructure, with potential future support for architectures such as RISC-V, said Matthias G. Eckermann, senior director of technology strategy at SUSE.

Enterprise Linux is being shaped by requirements spanning long lifecycle edge deployments, AI workloads, and supply chain verification.

Eckermann described a long-term architectural approach in which Linux remains consistent across systems from small edge devices to large-scale data center deployments. He added that this scalability could extend to additional processor architectures, including RISC-V.

“It is always the same kernel, it is the same libraries, it is the same tooling that you have on the Linux side,” Eckermann told EE Times, referring to SUSE’s approach to scaling Linux across device classes. He added that enterprise server support “from edge to data center” could extend “on RISC-V or whatever architecture you want,” while also stating that the company would remain focused on 64-bit systems due to the year 2038 limitation on 32-bit architectures.

Uniform kernel model across edge

Eckermann outlined a design model in which SUSE Linux is maintained as a single kernel baseline across deployments. He cited internal systems running SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15 Service Pack 7. The same kernel, he said, is used in SAP HANA deployments and in systems scaling to thousands of virtual CPU cores.
