A report from China states the upcoming iPhone Fold will utilize a 3D printed hinge designed to reduce the crease on its folding display. This marks the first specific disclosure about the 3D printing technology applied to the iPhone Fold’s hinge, which may additionally incorporate liquid metal and dual-layer glass in its design.

The use of 3D printing technology aims to achieve a smoother foldable experience, similar to Oppo’s Find N6, which has already implemented a Titanium Flexion Hinge made using 3D Liquid Printing. Oppo’s device attained a “zero-feel crease” by laser-measuring hinge depth at a microscopic level, allowing for the application of 3D liquid polymer to enhance hinge design compared to earlier foldable models.

Prior reports suggested that minimizing the display crease is a key focus for Apple in the development of the iPhone Fold. Apple’s history with 3D printed components includes the use of such technology for the Apple Watch series and the USB-C port of the iPhone Air. The 3D printing process is noted for its efficiency and reduced material consumption compared to traditional forging methods.
