If you’ve listened to a podcast, any podcast, in the past decade or so, you’ve probably heard of Squarespace. You can probably even recite the ads, “Whether it’s for your business, your blog, your side hustle. . .” and so on. Squarespace essentially serves as a cookie-cutter website-building platform, and now, Google intends to build a similar service with Android Auto.

Volvo

Google has announced a new open-source version of Android Auto that the company is calling Android Automotive OS for Software Defined Vehicles, or AAOS SDV. The new system is a more powerful version of Android Auto (AAOS), similar to the new Apple CarPlay Ultra, with the Google version taking things a step further.

In cars such as the Volvo EX90 that already run AAOS, the Google-based software controls the infotainment screens, giving passengers access to various applications. The new AAOS SDV software aims to take control of additional features such as seat actuators, climate controls, lighting, cameras, mirrors, vehicle telemetry, and, of course, infotainment.

Eser Erdem, a senior engineering manager on the Android Automotive team, described AAOS SDV in an Android Developers blog post as a “lightweight Android-based operating system incorporating low-level automotive specific frameworks for communications, diagnostics, software updates, and more.”

Google said that it is already working with various carmakers, suppliers, silicon platforms, and software vendors to make sure the technology is integrated into the automotive ecosystem…
