The city’s Department of Education recently released new guidance on the use of AI in the classroom.
This includes a stoplight approach with guidelines on when it is appropriate to use artificial intelligence tools. The district says AI can be used by teachers for brainstorming, scheduling, and non-sensitive communications.
It adds that programs should not be used for student counseling, grading, or private data.
Michael Mulgrew, the president of the United Federation of Teachers, released a statement saying school communities recognize AI as a tool requiring thoughtful implementation.
Parents and students have also been considering the role AI could have on the learning environment. James Baker, a father of three students at public schools and a member of the group Parents for AI Caution in Educational Spaces, joined “The Rush Hour” on Tuesday to react to the new policies.
