For all the flexibility that Android offers for third-party keyboards, Gboard is the only one worth using. Google keeps adding useful new features to its keyboard to improve the experience further. Still, it’s far from perfect, with the voice typing in particular leaving a lot to be desired. Google now plans to address a major Gboard oversight in this area.
Android Authority found a new “Use Bluetooth microphone” option in the latest Gboard for Android beta (v17.1.2). As the name suggests, enabling the toggle will let Gboard use the microphone of connected Bluetooth earphones or headphones for voice input.
Ideally, Gboard should already be doing this, but that’s not the case. After all, the mic on the connected Bluetooth headphone or microphone will capture your voice more clearly as it’s closer to your mouth.
This should be especially useful in loud and noisy environments and when you can’t type with both hands. Plus, this will make voice typing feel more natural, since you can speak directly into the earphones without raising the phone and bringing it close to your mouth.
With Bluetooth earbuds now a common accessory that many people use with their phones, it’s puzzling to see Google not adding support for such a basic feature so far.
