Google has announced plans to open-source a new version of its Android Automotive platform later this year, in a move aimed at simplifying how carmakers build and update software-defined vehicles (SDVs).
The development signals a broader push to standardise in-car software while accelerating the rollout of new features to users.
Google is extending Android Automotive OS beyond infotainment systems, introducing a new framework tailored for software-defined vehicles. By making the platform open source, the company is seeking to offer automakers greater flexibility in developing features while reducing dependence on fragmented, supplier-led software ecosystems.
For consumers, the shift is expected to result in a more consistent and responsive in-car experience. Features such as voice controls, app integration, digital keys and maintenance alerts are likely to function more seamlessly, supported by faster over-the-air updates that remove the need for dealership visits.
On the business side, Google stated that the initiative addresses long-standing inefficiencies in the automotive sector, where manufacturers often spend considerable time building foundational infrastructure instead of focusing on user-facing innovation. An open platform for non-safety systems could help streamline development processes and reduce time to market.
The company stated that the initiative is being developed in collaboration with partners including Renault Group and Qualcomm, with broader availability expected once the platform is released as open source later this year.
