The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater will introduce a new Bachelor of Science degree in artificial intelligence starting this fall, adding to a growing number of AI-focused programs across higher education.

UW-Whitewater is one of several campuses across the state to roll out an undergraduate AI major, joining UW-Eau Claire and UW-Stout and Milwaukee School of Engineering, among others.

According to the university, the program will combine coursework in computer science, mathematics, psychology and philosophy. Classes are expected to cover topics such as natural language processing, large language models, data mining and cognitive psychology, along with ethical considerations tied to AI.

University officials said graduates of the program could pursue roles in areas such as data science, information security, AI engineering and machine learning.

“The launch of our Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence reflects our commitment to career readiness and innovation, ensuring our graduates are prepared for some of the most in-demand roles in the region,” said Robin Fox, UW-Whitewater interim provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. “We are embracing AI as a university and — through our steadfast commitment to hands-on learning and student success — look to be a leader in preparing the first generation of AI professionals.”

In the past year, UW-Whitewater formed an internal working group to develop guidance on the use of generative AI and launched an AI-focused website. The university also created a Center for Ethical AI Integration to support research and outreach tied to the technology. Faculty and students have already presented AI-related teaching applications, including the use of chatbots and virtual reality in classroom simulations.
