AI chatbots are becoming a go‑to tool for everything from everyday advice to deeply personal conversations, but new data suggests many users may be overestimating their privacy.
A study of more than 1,200 Americans found nearly half believed AI chats are more private than texts or emails. One in 10 respondents said they have shared something with a chatbot they have never told anyone else, and 58% said that if that information were exposed, it could harm their career, relationships or reputation.
Additional research from PasswordManager.com shows similar trends. In a survey of 1,250 recent AI chatbot users, one in six said their chat history had already been accessed without permission. Nearly half said they believe AI conversations are more private than their texts, emails or browser history, and 32% reported taking no steps to protect their data despite widespread concern about privacy.
Those risks are already surfacing in real cases. Former NFL player Darren Lee is accused of killing his girlfriend, and prosecutors say his conversations with ChatGPT are now part of the investigation. According to court documents, the chats include questions about how to cover up the crime and what to say when calling 911.
Legal experts say users often misunderstand how little protection exists for what they share with AI systems.
