HINDS COUNTY, Miss. (WLBT) – The Hinds County Board of Supervisors has approved a measure allowing county firefighters to use Rapid SOS, part of a broader effort to link that system with the Eagle Eye Network for emergency response.

When a person calls 911 and gives permission, dispatchers can access cameras within 1,000 feet of the caller’s location in real time. The county is working with the City of Jackson to share camera feeds and finalize official policies for the combined system.

District 1 Supervisor Robert Graham said the technology gives first responders a clearer picture of what they are responding to before they arrive on scene.

“We’re putting those two together, which will allow officers within 1,000 feet to see the surroundings of a caller, and this will be one of the first in the nation that’s actually married. Eagle Eye Network and Rapid SOS together will be allowed to make sure that officers will have a better understanding as to what they’re coming into, what they’re going into, or what they’re responding to,” Graham said.

Local businesses, such as convenience stores, can also participate in the system by providing emergency teams access to their exterior cameras during a crisis.

“We need to make sure that we’ve given the officers all of the help that they need, all the technology that they need in order to actually allow them to attempt to reduce crime. The criminal has the advantage of knowing that the officers are looking for them. We need to give the officers an advantage,” Graham added.

The project is currently in the paperwork stage. Officials say most of the technical connections are already in place, and the system is expected to be fully operational once final policy agreements with the City of Jackson are signed.

If completed, Hinds County would be among the first jurisdictions in the nation to combine the Eagle Eye Network and Rapid SOS for public safety use.
