On the occasion of the International Day of Mathematics , celebrated on March 14 under the theme “Mathematics and Hope” , Pope Leo XIV addressed a message to the world mathematical community, transmitted through Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State.
In the text, the Pope expresses his gratitude for the invitation received from Professor Betül Tanbay, president of the International Day of Mathematics, and extends his cordial greetings to all participants in the webinar organized with this central theme.
Leo XIV emphasizes that mathematics is not just a technical or abstract discipline, but can become a genuine sign of hope for humanity, especially in a historical moment characterized by accelerated technological transformations and numerous global challenges.
The Pope reminds us that the rapid development of tools such as advanced algorithms and artificial intelligence demands a responsible approach now more than ever. In his words, this task requires not only intellectual brilliance or the capacity for innovation, but also integral human growth that explicitly incorporates the moral and ethical dimension.
“Technological progress,” the Pope affirms, “must always be oriented toward the service of truth, the common good, and the dignity of the human person.” In this regard, he invites mathematicians, scientists, and technologists to safeguard this ethical dimension, ensuring that advances are not detached from a sound anthropological vision and a genuine concern for future generations.
The message concludes with an encouragement for mathematics professionals to become beacons of hope, demonstrating that the rigorous pursuit of mathematical truth can go hand in hand with a commitment to building a more just, humane, and sustainable world.
