Apple introduced a small but noticeable keyboard change on the new MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models announced last week. The update affects several common keys on the U.S. English keyboard layout, and while the change looks minor at first glance, regular MacBook users will likely notice it immediately once they start typing on the new machines.
On the latest models, Apple replaced text labels on several keys with symbols. The Tab, Caps Lock, Shift, Return, and Delete keys now show glyphs instead of written labels. Earlier MacBook models used text on these keys, which made the layout slightly different from what Apple uses in some other regions.
According to Mr. Macintosh, who spotted the update soon after the announcement, the keyboard now follows a cleaner visual approach. He wrote, “Looks like Apple updated the keyboard on the new M5 16-inch MacBook Pro. The Backspace, Return, Shift, and Tab labels are gone, replaced with symbols instead.”
New keyboard look matches European layouts
Apple already uses glyph-based key labels on several European keyboard layouts, including British English versions of the MacBook. Because of this, the design will feel familiar to many users outside the United States.
The change also applies to the MacBook Neo, which shares the same keyboard layout as the new Air and Pro models. Since the U.S. English keyboard ships as the default option in countries like Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Singapore, users in those regions will see the updated symbols as well.
Apple plans to release the new MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Neo models this Wednesday.
