Artificial general intelligence (AGI) refers to a hypothetical form of artificial intelligence (AI) capable of performing the full range of human-level intellectual tasks. More specifically, artificial general intelligence refers to systems with broad, flexible and transferable intelligence that don’t require task‑specific programming.
Artificial general intelligence (AGI) is distinct from the broader category of AI. The latter includes any computational system designed to perform tasks that typically require human intelligence, such as speech recognition, image classification, translation or recommendations. Nearly all AI in use today — including systems built with machine learning — excels through specialization and pattern recognition rather than general reasoning.
AGI, by contrast, implies general‑purpose intelligence. An AGI system would be able to understand tasks in context, transfer knowledge between domains and apply reasoning to situations it has never faced before. This makes artificial general intelligence (AGI) qualitatively different from current AI, which achieves strong performance through specialization and large‑scale data processing rather than integrated, human‑level cognitive abilities.
