DILLON COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – A school district in the Pee Dee is in the process of deploying AI-based gun detection technology.
Dillon School District Four announced that it is deploying ZeroEyes’ artificial intelligence gun-detection and situational-awareness software as part of an effort to strengthen campus security.
ZeroEyes is a Philadelphia-area security technology company founded by former Navy SEALs that sells AI-based gun-detection software designed to work with existing security cameras, according to the company.
District leaders said the technology is meant to add another layer to security measures already in place, including metal detectors, shatterproof window film, handheld wands and two-way radios.
“Student and staff safety is not optional; it’s foundational,” said Dillon School District Four Superintendent Douglas Ray Rogers in a statement included in a release from ZeroEyes.
The district purchased the system using state funding tied to school safety upgrades, the company said.
According to the release, the software integrates with existing digital security cameras and is designed to detect the visible presence of a firearm.
When the system flags a potential gun, images are sent to the company’s ZeroEyes Operations Center for human review, the company said.
If analysts confirm a threat, ZeroEyes said it alerts law enforcement and school security teams and can provide details such as a visual description, gun type and last known location, potentially within seconds.
