Ring – a video doorbell system owned by Amazon – announced the cancellation of its partnership with the tech company Flock Safety. The decision was announced on Thursday after weeks of criticism surrounding the collaboration and an ad aired during the Super Bowl that promoted the Lost Pet Search feature and raised concerns about excessive surveillance.
The termination came after the previously planned integration of Flock – a maker of license-plate reading cameras – into the Community Requests feature, which allows law enforcement to request video footage from users for investigations.
We have determined that the planned integration of Flock Safety would require significantly more time and resources than anticipated. As a result, we have made a joint decision to cancel the planned integration.

Josh Thomas, Flock’s chief communications officer, told CNN that the ending of the partnership was a “mutual decision”.
Like Flock, Ring has long faced criticism over ties to law enforcement. Last year, independent outlet 404 Media highlighted the use of Flock’s technology in immigration investigations, calling privacy into question. Flock disputed these conclusions.
Public concern on social media after the Super Bowl ad grew, but several Ring users had already expressed concerns online before the partnership was announced.
These concerns partly aligned with national protests against ICE after the deaths of Alexa Preti and Rennie Good in Minneapolis. Last year, a viral post on X falsely claimed that ICE could access Ring cameras. The post received nearly 2 million views and prompted at least one longtime Ring user – Thomas Allison – to cancel their subscription.
