On February 1, Californians living in certain fire zones will be required to remove flammable materials, such as plants, trees, and fences, within a five-foot radius of all structures in fire-prone areas.
The new regulations come one year after wildfires ripped through Los Angeles, California, causing mass destruction to homes in the Southern California area.
To help prevent another fire, the state designated “Zone Zero” regulations.
Governor Gavin Newsom issued an executive order after the 2025 wildfires, requiring cities to comply with the California Board of Forestry and Fire Protection’s rules by the end of the year.

However, the Zone Zero law has been slowly implemented due to resident pushback.
